Gerardus Blasius (1625-1682)
The pathologist/anatomist Gerardus Blasius, who had been appointed Professor of Medicine ten years previously, received permission in 1669 to give ‘bedside education’ in one of the city hospitals. Some consider this permission to be the start of academic medicine in Amsterdam: scientific research, patient care and medical education went hand in hand for the first time.
