Son of Johannes van Keulen, founder of the family business. Dutch chart and instrument makers and publishers, the van Keulen firm lasted for over two hundred years. Gerard, a talented engraver, mathematician, and publisher, was appointed hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company in 1714.
