Commelijn, Isaac
(1598 - 1676)

Dutch publisher historian and editor, originally of Leiden. Moved to Amsterdam in 1641. His main works include a History of Amsterdam and the important illustrated compilation of early Dutch voyages Begin ende Voortgangh van de Vereeinighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Ost-indische Compagnie.... published in Amsterdam by Jan Jansson in 2 volumes in 1645/6. His son Jan Commelin [d.1698] was director of the Amsterdam Physic Garden & published an important botanical work, Horti medici Amstelodamensis rariorum ... plantarum ... descriptio et icones,. 2 vols [Amsterdam, 1697-1701].
